^6 glazes -

A good book for the beginner and advanced student of ceramics. Provides useful information to help limit a potters liability!
Paid for Itself Day 1 -

I haven't tried the recipes in this book yet, since I just read it over weekend, but I will say this book paid for itself day one in my opinion. It did this by alerting me to obtain the MSDS (materials safety data sheet) for all the materials in my studio. This caused me to look up all the MSDS for all the glazes we use in the studio, only to find out that one of the Laguna glazes we've been using, "Desert Yellow", has up to 5% Barium in it, which the authors don't recommend for use in functional glazes due to its high toxicity! Turns out "food safe" labeling only addresses the use of lead and cadmium. Sheez! We've been using this glaze with beginning students. Thanks "Mastering Cone 6 Glazes" I'm learning something on every page.

Great selections of branded hammocks at
- surely the ultimate teak furniture store!
Excellent reference for functional C/6 firing. -

This book is for the functional potter firing at Cone 6 who mixes up his/her glazes from raw materials. It thoroughly explains which kinds of glazes are best for food surfaces, and how to test glazes you already have for leaching, dishwasher safety, oven safety, microwave safety, and resistance to knife markings. There is also a chapter of some glaze recipes that are extremely low in leaching (all glazes will leach at least a tiny bit), to the point of being durable and excellent for functional ware. They include a glossy black, quite a few blues, greens, and some of the base glazes are useful on their own as clear liner glazes.
I have not tried any of the glazes in the book yet, but even if you don't use any of the glaze recipes, this book will help you much better understand and test the glazes you already use.
