PREFACE MUCH interest has been manifested of late in ornamental concrete, and so little seems to be known about the un- limited possibilities of the artistic treatment of this material, that the author has endeavored in the following chapters to explain in detail how concrete can be made into objects of art. Numerous inquiries have come to me from craftsmen who are anxious to work in this material but none of whom understand the nature of the material or the method in which it is to be handled. It is such in particular I had in mind when preparing this work and have therefore been most minute in my descriptions of how the various pieces described are to be made. I have taken for granted that the reader knows nothing whatever about the material and have explained each progressive step in the various operations throughout in detail. These directions I have supplemented with iv Preface illustrations which I have endeavored to make so clear that no one can misunderstand them. The method of using wire forms as a base on which to build up the finished piece is original with myself as far as I know, as is also the development of color work in cement. The chapter on the latter as well as those on Garden Furniture should appeal strongly to the professional as well as the layman inasmuch as there is a large and growing demand for this class of work. The amateur craftsman who has been working in clay will especially appreciate the adaptability of concrete for pottery work inasmuch as it is a cold process throughout, thus doing away with the necessity of kiln firing, which is necessary with the former material. The textures which can be obtained on articles made of concrete, as described in the chapter on aggregates, in many instances are far superior to those which can be obtained with any other materials, as they have a dis- tinct characteristic of their own and are full of life and sparkle. Preface If the reader derives as much pleasure as the author has done in experimenting with the material and in making the various articles described throughout the following pages the purpose of this work will have been accomplished. CUSTOMER REVIEWS:
a real gem -

If you're looking for pictures, or to copy someone elses work, this isn't the book for you. However, if you want really good information and practical guides that work, this is the one. It gives a lot of history and information on the "old" ways. Tips and tricks that were lost with time, and are just as valuable now as they were back then. For those in this field, I would rate this book a "must have". That's a rating I have never given to anything before.
- The home of teak outdoor furnitures

, simply quality bar stools
Excellent Material, Horrible Printing Job -

The book was written a long time ago but the information is still relevant and good to know. The printing job is abysmal almost all the pictures are so dark it almost impossible to make out what they are.
Outstanding old text with lots of "lost" techniques. -

I am a full-time artist who works in cement & concrete. This book reveals many of the old-school tricks & techniques that have been all but forgotten and is an absolute treasure. Please...someone... reprint this fine old collection of craftsmans savvy!
A book with rare and unique information -

This little book is about 100 years old, but it is a rare gem that you won't find easily. It's a truly wonderful craftsman's manual on how to make victorian-style concrete pottery---the kind that you would see in a beautiful victorian garden or mansion. Although very old, it's filled with photo demonstrations and diagrams of exactly what to do. It shows beautifully crafted planters with ornate relief work and the craftsman's techniques of making it. The book is a how-to book. I have never seen another book like this. I am surprised that it has not been republished, because there are a lot of people out there who have an interest in making things at home for their own garden, and garden ornaments and potter are becoming more and more popular. I highly recommend this treasure of a book.
